Goals and Objectives:
To provide a structured experience for students to develop web-based content.
To become familiar with the Health Sciences Library and the ECMC library.
To become familiar with the HIV Clinic at ECMC or Children's Hospital.
To develop skills in conducting literature searches, identifying key medical journals and textbooks.
To learn to summarize primary literature in tables and figures.
To develop exam writing skills and to develop annotated answers to short answer questions.
To review 8-10 HIV patients currently seen at ECMC or Children's Hospital of Buffalo (Pediatric HIV Clinic).
To develop algorithms for approaching HIV-related drug interactions and adverse effects.
Completion of the Clerkship
The clerkship will be complete when the student has provided:
an email with attachments of word and powerpoint files
a disk with the same files
hard copies of all primary references
print out of pertinent powerpoint presentations
completion of evaluation
Description of Activities
Purpose
To develop skills in case based, self-directed learning (and teaching);
literature retrieval; critical assessment; medical writing and contribute to
an innovative national program which integrates education, clinical care and
research in HIV pharmacotherapy.
Overview
The general focus of the activities will be to help develop material for
the HIV pharmacotherapy website (http://hiv.buffalo.edu) and provide clinical
services in HIV Pharmacotherapy to the HIV Clinic at ECMC, the PACT Clinic
at Children's Hospital of Buffalo, and other selected HIV sites in Buffalo.
All projects will be focused on HIV, although many other non-HIV issues
are presented and you can focus to some degree on your particular areas of
interest.
Some projects will "independent" and somewhat self-directed with periodic meetings to discuss issues/progress/problems.
You will be given assigned patient cases each week to review and prepare to present to the preceptor and in a formal setting during Virology Conference.
You will be assigned patients who will be coming into the Adherence Clinic and you will be expected to review the charts, prepare a pharmaceutical care consultation, discuss it with the preceptor and meet with the patient to discuss it.
