The Fellowship is a one year experiential program focused on
renal and immunosuppressive pharmacotherapy which is offered through
the Department of Pharmacy Practice, School of Pharmacy at the University
at Buffalo. The primary practice site involves the Division of Nephrology,
Department of Medicine at Erie County Medical Center. This division
provides multidisciplinary inpatient and ambulatory services which
include medicine, surgery, nursing, pharmacy, social work and nutrition
to a variety of patients with renal dysfunction as well as over 180
renal transplant recipients. This site serves as the basis for an
ongoing interdisciplinary clinical research program between the
Departments of Pharmacy and Medicine in immunosuppressive pharmacokinetics
and pharmacodynamics. This medical division serves as a teaching site
for Doctor of Pharmacy students from the University at Buffalo.
Educational Experiences
The fellow will obtain both clinical experiences involving renal
pharmacotherapeutics and immunosuppressive pharmacology though routine clinical
exposure to inpatient renal medicine service and renal transplant clinics. The
fellow will obtain research exposure to specific ongoing clinical pharmacology
and clinical pharmacokinetic /dynamic trials that are ongoing under the guidance
of Dr. Tornatore. A research project will be required for completion of this program.
The fellow will be required to audit established classes at UB to enhance knowledge in
specific areas of clinical pharmacology research.
Teaching Experiences
The fellow will receive an appointment as a Clinical Instructor at the
University of Buffalo which provides an opportunity to lecture in specific areas
of pharmacotherapeutics with direct supervision of Doctor of Pharmacy students
during clinical rotations.
